4.16.11 — Record Store Day #2: The Wake & Captured Tracks

Image
More Record Store Day enticements.  I'm not too familiar with The Wake, but I did enjoy the "On Our Honeymoon" track enough to possibly add their reissued 7"s to my ever-expanding wish list. Via Force Field PR: Captured Tracks reissues, pays tribute to The Wake VIDEO: The Wake - "On Our Honeymoon" Fan Video http://bit.ly/aLW1o STREAM: Beach Fossils - "Plastic Flowers ( The Wake cover)" - http://bit.ly/eNTqfp In celebration of record store day, Captured Tracks is releasing two classic, hard to find singles by highly influential Scottish post-punk band, The Wake. These two releases book-end the 80's for the band, as their privately released On Our Honeymoon 7" on Scan in 1982 was their first (and only) pre-Factory record, while Crush the Flowers 7" is their final release in the 80's (1989) and their first post-Factory record for the illustrious Sarah label. In conjunction with those two releases, Captured...

SXSW: The year in posters...

Image
Professionally, I'm a graphic designer, though I don't do much actual "designing" in my line of work. Matriculating at an art college left me few avenues for vocation, but I've always been drawn to poster art, even before I knew what graphic design was. Part of what I love about music is its visual accompaniment: show flyers, record covers, t-shirt design and other concertgoer ephemera or printed bits of historic matter. SXSW is upon us and, with it, my inbox is swelling with announcements of appearances from record labels and PR firms alike. I even got an invite this year, but money's short so that dream was short-lived. With that in mind, I figured I'd dedicate an entry to this year's SXSW poster art. So, consider this art-meets-performance schedule-meets-record label and PR promotion. Please note that I don't have much information regarding the artists of these posters, so if any information becomes available, or if the artists themselves ha...

Kicking Against The Pricks: Kill Your Idols

Image
My first music documentary review.  Kicking Against The Pricks was in need of some content for their music documentary section, so I volunteered a few hundred words or more for Kill Your Idols .  I'd seen this documentary not that long ago, and I figured I'd give it another viewing.  No Wave has remained an excruciatingly under-exposed era of punk rock's development, but also one of its more influential and interesting.  Also, being that the era's earliest contributors wind up opining about the bands that have followed in their footsteps, history is followed by some very caustic commentary.  It's worth a look.  In the meantime, check out the review and the latest issue of Kicking Against The Pricks. Issue #6 is up for perusal: http://kickingagainstthepricks.org/#home Kill Your Idols Scott Crary Palm Pictures Released: 7.7.06 Kicking Against The Pricks review Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

What I Heard This Morning: Seun Kuti and Egypt 80

Image
Admittedly late in the game on African music demigod Fela Kuti 's offspring, Seun Kuti , I received this press release regarding his next album, From Africa With Fury: Rise , and Brian Eno 's involvement caught my attention. Although I didn't find any songs from the upcoming release, I checked out "Many Things" which is the title track from Seun's 2008 album. This could be one of those rare instances when the typicality of a son's wish to follow in daddy's footsteps proves advantageous and somehow Seun sounds capable of making his own mark. Via Sure Shot PR: Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 - From Africa With Fury: Rise Released by Because Music on 4th April UK tour begins on 13th April “This is what Afrobeat is all about and if I could give the album 10 stars I would – it’s absolutely superb.” Michael de Koningh.
