Mount Eerie: "This"

Image
I know what to expect when it comes to Phil Elverum .  I knew for example that, once I found out Elverum, (or as he's professionally known, Mount Eerie ), had released a new single, that I was probably going to need to listen to it five or six times before I'd have ANY idea of how to describe it.  Elverum is blessed with a distinct and sensitive hand when composing melodies, his harmonized quests dominated by subtlety, warmth and a light dose of unease.  Elverum's new single, "THIS," is the first from the upcoming new Mount Eerie release, Sauna , which will be out in early February through his P.W. Elverum and Sun label.  The song begins with an aftershock, the type that would normally follow an unspeakably horrible or dramatic event, and then transitions into a graceful organ melody that's eventually built upon by the voices of Allyson Foster ( Hungry Cloud Darkening ) and Ashley Eriksson ( Lake ), a beautifully sung first verse is accompanied by light...

Holy Sons: "Breakdown (On The Beach)," "Beverly Hills," "Addiction," "More Therapy"

Image
About a month ago, I started receiving PR about Holy Sons , which is a solo project from the multi-instrumental talent Emil Amos of Grails and Om .  Amos will be releasing The Fact Facer in late September via Thrill Jockey Records and, while I haven't heard actual tracks from the album just yet, interesting pseudo-covers of punk tracks emerged that I thought were worth checking out.  Also included is "More Therapy," which is a Holy Sons original.  All info, links and sounds come courtesy of Thrill Jockey Records. Hear Holy Sons bonus tracks featuring covers of hardcore legends Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Slapshot Brand new Holy Sons album 'The Fact Facer' on 22nd September Holy Sons is Emil Amos, a musician whose chameleonic tendencies and technical versatility has lead to him becoming an in demand multi-instrumentalist as a founding member of Grails and Lilacs & Champagne , as well as a member of Om . Chelsea Wolfe: Pain Is Beauty Trailer

Image
A new Chelsea Wolfe album, Pain Is Beauty , will be out in early September.  No singles yet, but a trailer for the album has surfaced that you can view below.  Cover art, links, tour dates and track list lovingly supplied by Us/Them Group. CHELSEA WOLFE ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM PAIN IS BEAUTY RELEASE DATE SEPTEMBER 3RD ON SARGENT HOUSE + HEADLINE US/CANADIAN TOUR DATES How often nowadays do we read of an artist's "intensity", or their rhetorical, one-of-a-kind individuality? Journalistic hyperbole routinely contorts the mundane into the "epic", the tired into the inspired, all the while heaping praise on performers as seemingly vacuous and generic as possible. Navigating the landscape of contemporary alternative music can be an exercise in redundancy; true visionaries and boundary-pushers are few and far between. Enter Chelsea Wolfe. To simply call Wolfe unique would be an understatement. Even among her peers in the so-called "drone-metal-art-folk...

Mount Eerie: "Pale Lights"

Image
A new single from Mount Eerie' s second release for 2012, Ocean Roar , is circulating online.  "Pale Lights" seems consistent with much of what made the recently released Clear Moon stand out, Mr. Mount Eerie himself, Phil Elverum , reveling in light dissonance and folk bred psychedelia.  Release is set for September 4th.  The song, links and all info are provided by Force Field PR. Mount Eerie's Clear Moon was recently reviewed at No Ripcord . Mount Eerie announces second album of 2012, Ocean Roar out this Sept. What I Heard This Morning: Mount Eerie

Image
Shortsighted on my part, but the presence of Earth and Ô Paon as touring mates drew enough interest from me to check out Mount Eerie , who has a new album coming out this May called Clear Moon .  Another album, Ocean Roar , will follow later this year. Searching through Mount Eerie's website , (real name Phil Elverum ), I found this video of a live performance for the song, "Between Two Mysteries," which I really enjoyed.  The synthesizer tones are reminiscent of Angelo Badalamenti 's Twin Peaks score , that haunting sheet of muted hum underlying the instrumentation.  All below info is courtesy of Force Field PR. Mount Eerie - Between Two Mysteries from Elijah Alvarado on Vimeo . Mount Eerie announces new LP, Clear Moon, due this May, first of two new albums to be released this year In this first of two new albums planned for release in 2012, Mount Eerie presents a monumental work of depth and maturity. These are songs about a quiet life in and aroun...

Daytrotter: DM Stith and Wooden Wand

Image
Some dark folk music for your Thursday morning? Daytrotter recently recorded DM Stith and Wooden Wand ( James Toth ) and the performances are top notch. Both Stith's Heavy Ghost and Wooden Wand's Death Seat have received kudos and I couldn't recommend either album more.  Their respective performances for Daytrotter only confirm that both have something to offer, neither artist catering to devolving or monotonous tastes or dumbing themselves down to gain an ear or two.  I believe the folk genre to be over-saturated with mediocrity, its true potential for poetry sadly wasted thanks to the ease of cliché.  But, if the genre should continue to falter, then artists like Stith and Toth can only continue to standout, the FM shit running the indistinguishably banal while discernible talent hopefully finds footing in the alternative media. 9.30.11: DM Stith's Daytrotter set   10.1.11: Wooden Wand's Daytrotter set Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

What I Heard This Morning: Chelsea Wolfe

Image
“Doom folk:” This is how Chelsea Wolfe is categorized, her morbidity cautiously accessible but beautiful nonetheless. It’s difficult at times to endorse death-tinged performers like Wolfe, the whole theatricality associated with devils and darkness a rather easy racket to break into when your audience hasn’t been initiated to others of the same ilk. Diamanda Galás fans, for instance, would probably take Wolfe with a grain of granulated salt. You may as well try selling Twilight to Nosferatu fans. However, Wolfe has an angelic voice, a haunting presense and the music bears enough esoteric and outlandish thought to warrant attention. Plus, she’s touring with Liturgy , whose new album earned my praise recently , (for whatever that’s worth). Tracks from Wolfe’s upcoming release, Ἀποκάλυψις (Apokalypsis) , are via Stereogum and from the links below which were provided by Force Field PR. “Mer” is especially awesome.  Go here for that track. Chelsea Wolfe premieres new...

Six Organs of Admittance: Light of the Light

Image
Yesterday, I saw the video for the Six Organs of Admittance single, "Light of the Light," which was one of the highlights on Ben Chasny 's (Mr. Six Organs, himself) last album, Asleep on the Floodplain .  A lot of musicians/bands seem to be really into this whole videocassette textured anti-fidelity music video lately.  In Chasny's case, I think it works, though.  The video looks as sentimental as his music might sound, and the washes of reverb floating off Chasny's guitar seem complimented by the visual's lack of clarity. The album was reviewed for No Ripcord .   I found the video via Drag City . Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

What I Heard This Morning: Matt "MV" Valentine & aTelecine...

Image
A couple oddities for today. Matt Valentine' s "PK Dick" plays like some Doors meets OCS dedication to sci-fi author Philip K. Dick ; part hippie sitar-carved psych head, part lo-fi excess reverb wanderer.  Valentine doesn't stray too far from the sort of retro-revivalism that Brian Jonestown Massacre entertains, but his is a looser and more layered variety. Matt "MV" Valentine: "PK Dick" by alteredzones All info, links and pictures are courtesy of Force Field PR. Matt "MV" Valentine preps new LP for Woodsist STREAM: "PK Dick" - http://soundcloud.com/alteredzones/matt-mv-valentine-pk-dick/s-VEtm9 If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine has released that definitely shouldn't be filed under a group name ( Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, on...
