So, this is the second single I've posted from Times New Viking's Dancer Equired LP.
Agreed that the nostalgia-for-pre-murderous-Spector is getting tiresome at this point, garage wave and anti-clarity churning out many a substitute teacher more than happy to sound ethereal, rugged and ghostly. I like garage rock and I’ve enjoyed the resurgence its enjoyed over the last ten years very much, but I’m almost begging for an era of post-progressive bands, which seems to be happening with Battles, Adebisi Shank and Empty Space Orchestra to name a few.
Having said that, though, I like Times New Viking’s “Try Harder.” Yes, it exemplifies exactly the exhausted sound I speak of. However, if the drums need penetrate a vintage and ghostly sheen and if the vocals need be awash in reverb, at the very least the band works the riff like pulling clay apart with both hands. It has a driving element that penetrates the murk, which sort of qualifies the track as less of a lo-fi track and more of an actual garage track. Remedial Kinks, perhaps, but it sticks in your head.
