No Ripcord: Top 50 Albums of 2008 (Part One)

So, the year's almost over and all the last minute tallies are being rung up so as to decide how 2008 faired as a music year. Despite being mostly absent around the beginning of 2008, with my daughter being born two months early and family obligations canceling out blogging obligations, I did my best to stay up-to-date and hopefully won a lot of new readers. I also managed to score some extra work with the cordial staff at No Ripcord, who were nice enough to take me on as a contributor.

I will be compiling my own personal best of..., as I usually do, but probably not until early to mid-January. I still have some releases I want to get through, which I will hopefully complete before the ball drops in Times Square.

In the meantime, No Ripcord asked me to summarize four albums for their Top 50:

Sleaford Mods Chubbed Up + Ipecac Recordings Released:11.29.14 Sleaford Mods is an interesting entity. Following much of the rhythmic and minimal throb of Factory-era post-punk and, of course, hip hop's rise from being a "sample sport," as Public Enemy once put it, to the largely trap-centric hit machine it is today, Sleaford Mods embodies a tirade-level synthesis of the two: a beat-powered device with which to bathe in poetic and profanity-laced commentary. The group (vocalist Jason Williamson and track maker Andrew Fearn ) gained some notoriety stateside with its 2013 release, Austerity Dogs , despite having been about five albums deep in its discography. The group's new release, Chubbed Up +, is a singles compilation that includes three previously unreleased tracks. It was released by Ipecac Recordings. What I Heard This Morning: Snapped Ankles

Received notice this morning of a band called Snapped Ankles , who will be releasing a single in late March called, "True Ecology (Shit Everywhere)."  It's a decent art rock tune and my mind immediately went to Devo for comparison's sake.  The linked version of the song is very short, so I'm assuming it's an excerpt of the single. All info comes courtesy of Sure Shot PR.
