It's interesting to hear Frankie Rose ( Vivian Girls , Dum Dum Girls ) take her usual mode of Phil Spector teenage dream pop bliss and come up with something like "Know Me," which is more of a Cure or Smiths influenced, high tempo variation. Over the weekend, news surfaced that Seattle's super-strong Black Breath will be releasing a new album this March dubbed, Sentenced To Life .  Revisiting the band's first LP, Heavy Breathing , I can only hope that the madmen behind Black Breath are able to maintain the severe momentum with the new album.  They have their work cut out for them. Mike Patton remains on a scoring kick, having been selected to score The Place Beyond The Pines , a new movie from Blue Valentine director, Derek Cianfrance .  And, apparently, a new Tomahawk album is in the works, which could release later this summer.  Excited about that possibility to be sure. Gift of Gab , the seriously talented emcee from hip-hop duo Blackalicious , is releasing a new album, The Next Logical Progression , on March 27th. The album’s lead single, “Protocol,” recently surfaced and I think it’s worth checking out.  Though I rate Blackalicious' A2G EP, Nia and Blazing Arrow as some of the best hip-hop albums in existence, Gift Of Gab's 2004 solo venture, 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up , was a disappointment.  I blame production, but I'm hoping that "Protocol" is a clear indication of quality for The Next Logical Progression .  If nothing else, I hope the title means what it says. Wolf People 's Tidings compilation, which incorporates their earliest recordings between 2005 and 2007, is being reissued on CD by Jagjaguwar on January 23rd.  Here's a trippy video of their song "Cotton Strands," which I really enjoyed.  As far as bands that capitalize on nostalgia, Wolf People at least taps into The Mothers Of Invention , Jethro Tull and Captain Beefheart , leaving the garage revival one less rock band hip to the simplicity of vintage amps and blues chords.  Granted Wolf People's music owes all of itself to a particular time and place, an array of sounds that almost shouldn't be restructured for a modern era just because of how well they invoke the ghosts of Peace&Love antiquity, but the tunes are engrossing and easy to enjoy.  The 60s have obviously left an indelible impression on the development of modern rock n' roll and Wolf People seem to work as a reminder.  "Cotton Strands" by Wolf People from Secretly Jag on...
