Disco Doom: "Mt. Surreal"

Image
A pleasantly discordant new single from Disco Doom surfaced today called "Mt. Surreal", second single from the band's upcoming album of the same name. While it does take some time for the track to take shape, Disco Doom interestingly blur the line between jamming and improvisation. The track eventually collapses into No Wave-infused dissonance that embellishes the track's tangential extended second half, gentle improv that doesn't alienate or challenge the listener. In fact it's anchored well enough by a repeating bass riff, which stays with you long after the track finishes up. Pre-order link: https://explodinginsoundrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mt-surreal Mt. Surreal will be released 9/16 via Exploding In Sound Records .   Sincerely,  Letters From A Tapehead

Side A — Assembled 3/24-4/5 This may as well be titled March Sucked (Here's Some Music).  The saying may state "silence is golden", but I can confirm that that's never the case when it comes to my silence. It's normally work-related. Still trying to fix that. For music, I have a million tabs open on now multiple browser windows that I keep because "I may get back to it". These wind up being selections for these comp posts. Do these comp posts gain any views or pique enough interest to incentivize interaction (Holy alliteration, Batman!), or is this a waste of time? Not sure. Either way, these entries do provide somewhat of a handy-dandy checklist at the end of the year for me to reference when I'm selecting my favorite singles or albums of the year.  I know blogs are dead, but I still enjoy writing when I'm able. Don't laugh, but I've begun building an audience on TikTok and I'm trying to figure out how to engage this new audience wit...

Good evening,  I heard some good songs today. The coffee intake was high as I was sunk into my headphones this afternoon, finding comfort in the fact that I was able to simply cancel out all unwanted stimuli in favor of tunes aplenty. My ears perked up for the following: 2020 Playlist _________________________________________ Masma Dream World:  "Theta" (via Clandestine Label Services / Northern Spy Records / Bandcamp) Play At Night releases 9/25/20 Album Pre-Order https://masmadreamworld.bandcamp.com/album/play-at-night via Clandestine Label Services Masma Dream World—the solo recording project of multi-disciplinary artist/healer Devi Mambouka—today shared the lead single "Theta" from her forthcoming full-length, Play At Night , releasing September 25th, 2020 via Northern Spy Records. OOIOO: "jibun"

Yoshimi 's OOIOO is releasing a new album via Thrill Jockey called nijimusi . A single from the album titled "jibun" reveals exactly what is to be expected from OOIOO: playful instrumental navigation anchored by remarkable rhythmic acuity. It's like dreamy, minimalist academia. There's a glorious swell of instrumentation that breaks up the track midway, swinging low end and rapid snare fills carrying this melodic blanket of guitar sound. The latter half of the song is more vocal and exploratory, OOIOO leaning into a few more ideas that don't deviate too much from "jibun"'s initial melodic theme. You can check out the track below. All info is provided by Thrill Jockey. Nijimusi by OOIOO Japanese avant-rock innovators OOIOO (ft. What's (Re)New — Thee Oh Sees / Oh Sees / OCS on 8-Track

Image
Photo Credit: 5Seven Records If you check out the 5Seven Records website right now, you'll be confronted with an annoyingly unreadable nod to the days of GeoCities web pages, vivid green and yellow paragraphs typed out in Times with inactive underlining placed as if joking with the user: "Is it a link? Nope!". As if to drive home antiquity, you'll also be shown some info regarding John Dwyer 's new boxset, which compiles 8-track versions of his work dated 2008 till 2018. This includes records from Thee Oh Sees , Oh Sees , and OCS . It also contains a zine. I imagine the circle jerk comprised of collectors that commenced following this news was significant and led to multiple floods and drownings. While I'm not thrilled with the prospect of an unplayable boxset, (which is the case unless you own an 8-track player), the artifact(s) itself is something to look at. The cool factor is undeniable and there was certainly a lot of work put into it, but its impr...
