Online Sounds: Boris — “鏡 -Zerkalo-“ & NO

Image
Boris NO Released: 7.3.20 Boris ain't fuckin' around. The band's latest release, NO , was released as a digital LP on Bandcamp and finds the trio conjuring amplified gargantua via Discharge-blessed tempos ("Anti-Gone"), mountain-crumbling doom-laden immensity ("鏡 -Zerkalo-"), or softening sheets of ethereal tonality ("HxCxHxC -Perforation Line-"). NO functions well as an immediately gratifying and unbridled release of bullshit-free guitar-n-drum relayed energy. NO by Boris Sincerely,Letters From A Tapehead

Online Sounds: Psychic Graveyard

Mouths by Psychic Graveyard was released for Bandcamp Friday on May 1st via Deathbomb Arc . A quick 5-song listen built purely from the time and frustration that extensive periods of quarantine have made available, Mouths is an electro-jolt of urgent, and mostly negative, energy. With commentary informed by the pandemic and the subsequent behaviors manifested by the American public, every track is a "mouth" and every mouth has a lot to say. "He gets drunk / He attends the protest / His American heart is rotting … inside his chest." — "American Mouth" The album is available digitally for purchase: https://deathbombarc.bandcamp.com/album/mouths Mouths by Psychic Graveyard Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Online Sounds: NOUS

Image
When you read the mission statement of the record label Our Silent Canvas , an entity that prides itself on encouraging “exploration of the complete sensory experience, by developing performances featuring a collaboration of these various arts, ” it seems to outline and explain the existence of NOUS , a collaborative musical endeavor started by Ghost Against Ghost ’s Christopher Bono . With a five-member core of outsider and neoclassical artists — Bono, Greg Fox ( Guardian Alien , Zs , Ben Frost , ex- Liturgy ), Shahzad Ismaily ( Yoko Ono , Laurie Anderson , Bonnie Prince Billy ), Thor Harris ( Swans , Angels of Light , Amanda Palmer , Shearwater ), Grey McMurray ( itsnotyouitsme , So Percussion , Tyondai Braxton ) — NOUS was developed during a week of recorded sessions, the first of which will be released by Our Silent Canvas as NOUS I: A Musical Rite . Structurally varied enough to cross genres, though the album would undoubtedly qualify as a post-rock jam, NOUS I is fascinati...

Online Sounds: The Young Mothers — "Black Tar Caviar" (Single Premiere)

Image
The Austin-based experimental sextet known as The Young Mothers are releasing their second album this week, Morose .   Currently based in Austin, The Young Mothers tie together backgrounds as regionally varied as Texas, Chicago, New York, and Norway, engaging their multiple influences into a cross-genre synthesis of protest music and aural turbulence. As if to illustrate this perfectly, for the single "Black Tar Caviar," The Young Mothers compose a discordant, rhythmic tug of war that attempts to merge jazz-based improvisation with the bare-knuckle assault of hardcore or powerviolence.  Somewhat akin to the avant sonics and noise-fetish brass explorations of John Zorn , especially for its frenzy of a finale, "Black Tar Caviar" pairs confusion and aggression in a compelling way, pitting the avantgarde against the underground and reveling in the forms' rejection of each other.  Those opening Albert Ayler -styled sax notes almost seem like a red herri...

Online Sounds: Ulver

Image
In April of 2017, Ulver released a chilling synthesizer-driven beauty of an LP titled,  The Assassination of Julius Caesar , which brought to mind some understandable comparisons, the most prominent and obvious, in my mind anyway, being  Depeche Mode .  As if to validate this comparison, a new three-song EP from the band surfaced called  Sic Transit Gloria Mundi , itself also an electronically robust and somewhat morose new offering that features two songs that weren't quite ready for inclusion in  Julius Caesar  and a cover of "Power Of Love" by  Frankie Goes To Hollywood .  Videos were also developed to accompany the two original tracks, "Echo Chamber (Room Of Tears)" and "Bring Out Your Dead."  Links for the videos can be found here and here , or in the album info I've posted.  Interested?  You can listen below via Ulver's  Bandcamp  and, if so inclined, buy the EP now digitally or wait until physical copies emer...

Online Sounds: Jarboe & Father Murphy

Image
The spoken tale of "The Ferryman," precedes the funerary tone of "Truth or Consequences," this 2-song 10" by Jarboe and Father Murphy a quick, intensely dark, and moving listen. Jarboe's sung melancholia lightly and beautifully suspends over the organ that introduces "Truth or Consequences," creating a grander, more tender transition into the repetitious prayer that carries the song to its end. Releasing today via Consouling Sounds , you can listen to the album below before you purchase it. You can order it  here . All info, links, and tour dates are provided by Rarely Unable. Online Sounds: Swansea — Flaws

Image
Swansea Flaws Self Group Release: 4.28.17 Vocalist Rebecca Sanborn freely details a running stream of thoughts and observations as "Red Mittens" unfolds, introducing Flaws , the newly released second LP from Portland trio Swansea . While Sanborn riffs through what she sees and feels, ( "And, I don't sound cool/I don't sound smart/I don't sound awesome/I don't even sound like a freak" ), she's anchored by a clap-along backbeat and minimalist stabs of synthesized tone, electronically enabled pop sugar a touch more elaborate than the "Warm Leatherette" of yore. Swansea, the work of Sanborn ( Loch Lomond , Blue Cranes ), drummer Ji Tanzer ( Blue Cranes ), and multi-instrumentalist Kyleen King , is fun sans guilt, integrity and attention paid to how they approach synthpop constructs ("This Time") and percussive loops ("No Blame"), ear candy that's neither MOR or disposable.  Particularly engaging is the cha...

Online Sounds: Saltland's A Common Truth

Image
An album both despairing and lovely, I’ve been listening to Saltland ’s second LP, A Common Truth , over the last week or so. The solo moniker of Rebecca Foon , co-founder of Esmerine and member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra , Saltland’s latest LP is a composed reflection on climate change and its environmental and social impact. With a fascinating marriage of electronic/ambient elements and rich, textural string arrangements, plus instrumental assistance from Warren Ellis of The Dirty Three and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds , Foon’s commanding presence, both instrumentally and vocally, moves through this piece with a captivating blend of emotion and warmth. I find her vocal in “I Only Wish This For You,” particularly haunting, her inflection breathy and kind of devastating. On the instrumental track “Forward Eyes I,” it’s as if you can hear the promise of a new day being slowly eradicated as time elapses, opportunity fading into the ether as daylight fades. A C...
