2020 Playlist — numün, So Sure, SUMAC, Bent Arcana, Daniel Blumberg, Hekla, Butcher Brown, Bully

Image
To whom it may interest, Collecting sounds over the past couple weeks for a new entry for my  2020 Playlist . I'd been largely absent for most of July thanks to the demands of my day job, the high doses of pain killers I had to ingest thanks to a severe back issue, and other distractions and otherwise tiring things that required attention and focus. I'm hoping to have more to say in the coming months, (though I've made THAT promise before). If you've hung in there, thank you. If you haven't, maybe I can win back your approval. Hope you're all well and staying safe. Please wear your masks. Enjoy. _________________________________________ numün :  "voyage au soleli" (via Clandestine Label Services / Musique Impossible / YouTube) Album Pre-Order https://music.joelmellin.com/album/voyage-au-soleil via Clandestine Label Services Numün is a trio of New York City soundscape designers who combine a wide range of music ...

Mr. Gnome: Softly Mad (and how!)

Image
Mr. Gnome Softly Mad El Marko Records Released: 3.20.12 One of last year's more interesting albums was the distortion happy Madness In Miniature by Mr. Gnome , its members Nicole Barille and Sam Meister having crafted a very strong guitar album that based itself on fantastical imagery.  Mr. Gnome makes the guitar/drum duo thing work pretty well, maximizing their sound beyond what some would consider a limited musical vocab.  Actually, the record catches you by surprise, some of the band's decisions and musical shifts as cerebral as they were imaginative.   Following last year's LP, Barille and Meister have released a two-song 7" called Softly Mad , (which is digital-only apparently, so I'm still trying to figure out how physical circumference applies to digital music, but I guess that's just semantics), which differs in that it's less concerned with pop rock melodies, time signatures and alt. riffs.  Softly Mad is slow, ponderous and electronic...

Frankie Rose & La Sera: The Vivian Girls Churn Out the Melodic Solo

Image
Between Frankie Rose and Katy Goodman ’s solo project, La Sera , O.G. Spector -worshippers Vivian Girls have really saturated the scene with melodic, lo-fi garage and Shangri-La pop groove. Spawning the solo and collaborative dabbling of Rose and Goodman, both of whom are putting out new albums in the next month or so, you do have to wonder how many more albums Vivian Girls have left before the sound is completely exhausted. Moving in a proactive manner, the starry-eyed nuances often associated with this sound are seeming to fall by the wayside. Rose, in particular, seems much less enchanted with sounding enchanted, taking on a cleaner edge and hardening the otherwise softness of her music. You could even cite The Smiths or The Cure as a basis for Interstellar , her upcoming new album. There’s jangling riffs and synthesizers, electro-tinged percussion. Certainly a throwback sound, but now twenty-years later than her last throwback sound. Frankie Rose - Gospel/Grace fro...

Weekend: The One You Want

Image
I just listened to "The One You Want" off of Weekend 's last EP, Red , which I've apparently slept on seeing as it came out around the end of September.  The band will apparently be touring with The Soft Moon , whom I really enjoy , and they toured with Wire so I thought spotlighting the single would be worthwhile to anyone not in the know.  I'm sure that's just me. Vivian Girls: Take It As It Comes

Image
A video for the Vivian Girls ' the very girly, very 60s pop track “Take It As It Comes” is out. The tongue-in-cheek puppy love thing is treated with a fair amount of nostalgia and obvious sarcasm perfect for the track itself which comes to you via the Girls’ new album, Share The Joy . Share The Joy was reviewed for Kicking Against The Pricks but is currently unavailable due to some linking issues. All info about the album and tour dates comes courtesy of Force Field PR. Tera Melos: Kelly

A few days ago, Consequence Of Sound posted a new video from Tera Melos for the song, “Kelly,” which is off their Patagonian Rats release. With a nice little nod to David Cronenberg and 80s cinema, there are warmhearted reactions from the likes of Christopher Reeve and Rick Moranis to animated billboards displaying some grotesque scenes from Scanners , Videodrome and a few others. In the meantime, the song is kind of a nerdy power pop track. I still need to pick this album up. Tera Melos - "Kelley" from Consequence of Sound on Vimeo . Information on the band’s 51 minute opus, “Echoes on the Hills of Knebworth” and their tour documentary can be found here . EDIT: Don't know why it eluded me that the video for Bobby Brown 's "On Our Own," the theme song he came up with for the super inferior Ghost Busters 2 , was appropriated for "Kelly."  Just not on the ball. Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Stream the new Crystal Stilts album now Plus extended tour dates FULL ALBUM STREAM: In Love With Oblivion - http://hypem.com/#!/artist/Crystal Stilts VIDEO: "Through The Floor" - http://vimeo.com/21156560 Back in 2008, a lot of heads turned to clock Crystal Stilts' Alight Of Night , their first album after a string of here-today-gone-tomorrow singles and EPs. It wasn't exactly a surprise - Crystal Stilts felt like part of a new age dawning, of underground collectives and random, crazy groups who'd rediscovered the joys of noise-pop and set about creating their own Creations - but there was something unique about Crystal Stilts, something hermetic yet gorgeous about the world they created. With their new album, In Love With Oblivion , they stretch things further still, honing t...
