Disco Doom: "Mt. Surreal"

Image
A pleasantly discordant new single from Disco Doom surfaced today called "Mt. Surreal", second single from the band's upcoming album of the same name. While it does take some time for the track to take shape, Disco Doom interestingly blur the line between jamming and improvisation. The track eventually collapses into No Wave-infused dissonance that embellishes the track's tangential extended second half, gentle improv that doesn't alienate or challenge the listener. In fact it's anchored well enough by a repeating bass riff, which stays with you long after the track finishes up. Pre-order link: https://explodinginsoundrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mt-surreal Mt. Surreal will be released 9/16 via Exploding In Sound Records .   Sincerely,  Letters From A Tapehead

Apologies for the quiet September. My time was needed everywhere but here. That said, I'm happy to end the month with some good singles that I hope you'll enjoy. Alt-Rock and a Flux Capacitor: Ovlov's Am

Image
Ovlov Am Exploding in Sound Records Released: 7.2.13 Yuck released their self-titled debut in 2011. It didn’t seem much of a coincidence that, following the 20th anniversary of Nirvana ’s landmark release, Nevermind , a newly plaid and purposely faded crew of guitar-oriented 90s gazers would become the talk of the web for a little while. It also wasn’t much of a surprise when more and more of these bands began to emerge in the wake of dubstep and garage revivalism. It’s the perfect time for these bands to come out because Gen X-ers brought up hearing Dinosaur Jr. or Sonic Youth during their formative years are primed to look back and remember when. I myself, though subconsciously enthralled to hear a band like Ovlov on my stereo, have difficulties reconciling my want of music to move forward while my ears filter the sounds and fond remembrances of my most visceral listening experiences as an adolescent abound. This is the paradox of Ovlov’s new album, Am . At its core,...

Mogwai: "Wizard Motor" (Single)

Image
Mogwai 's soundtrack for the French television show, Les Revenants , will be released by Sub Pop on February 26th.  Their new single "Wizard Motor" surfaced today, pushing the band's signature drama and expansive guitar sound into the televised realm with decent enough results.  Considering the supernatural tone of the show, "Wizard Motor," at the very least, sounds appropriate to the subject matter. Sample the tune and review the info below.  All info, links and music were provided by Sub Pop. Speedy Ortiz (Fuckin' Hates Playing Indoor Soccer)

Image
Speedy Ortiz Sports EP Exploding In Sound Records Released: 6.5.12 The Northampton, MA based Speedy Ortiz is a 90s allegiant rock quartet based in the guitar rock and Alterna-pop'dom of the era.  Appealing to the once flannel-clad set now subsisting on nostalgia, Speedy Ortiz, whose members include singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis , guitarist Matt Robidoux , bassist Darl Ferm and drummer Mike Falcone , have released Sports , a five-song EP synthesizing the more hook-savvy aspects of The Pixies or The Breeders and some of the distorted power pop and anti-melody of Sebadoh.  Dupuis, holding her own amongst 90s female rockstar alumni like Liz Phair , Juliana Hatfield , Tanya Donelly and Kim Deal , delivers pretty and unpolished testimony, her verses dealt in winningly profane and suggestive modes of conveyance.  The music itself makes one miss the days of early 90s episodes of 120 Minutes , Speedy Ortiz convincing enough to have themselves made an appearance or tw...

Dear Grass Is Green: I missed Jawbox, too.

Grass Is Green Ronson Exploding In Sound Records Released: 3.1.12 I've been listening to Ronson , the third album from Boston post-punk/post-hardcore band, Grass Is Green , on and off since its release.  Many times I've sat listening to it and attempted to perfectly distill my reasons for liking it, which hasn't been easy.  Speaking objectively, Grass Is Green could serve as the functioning successor to Disc 2 of Dischord Records' 20 Years of Dischord compilation, their own sound the perfect culmination of many of the bands featured on that disc, namely Fugazi , Faraquet , Branch Manager , Smart Went Crazy , Jawbox and Lungfish .  Ronson captures many of the elements that shaped and informed early pre-Alternative 90s America, the sort of off-kilter rock sounds that epitomized the shift from hardcore to indie rock.  The combined efforts of guitarist/vocalist Andy Chervenak , guitarist Devin McKnight , bassist Michael Thomas and drummer Jesse Weiss , despite...

Black Mountain: Mary Lou

Image
Psych rock band, Black Mountain , are releasing a soundtrack album for an apocalyptic surf movie, Year Zero .  Apparently, the end of the world means surfing with liberty, driving Mustangs and fuck food and shelter.  Black Mountain have released a new single from the soundtrack, "Mary Lou," which really riffs on expansive desert-singed atmosphere.  It would be more enveloping, but its rhythm is heavily concentrated and vocally stern, so there's a presence maintained even if the song wanders a tad. The Year Zero soundtrack features five original tracks and five not-so new tracks and is slated for release on April 3rd.  Check out the song and read all the info, which was generously sent over by the good people at Jagjaguwar. Black Mountain's 2010 release, Wilderness Heart , was reviewed at No Ripcord.    Black Mountain - "Mary Lou" by Jagjaguwar Black Mountain Soundtracks New Surf Film Year Zero Download New Song "Mary Lou" Bl...

What I Heard This Morning: Exploding In Sound — Circulatory System

Image
A word or two from Mr. Goldin: The year is coming to a close, and the world approaches the ever futuristic sounding year 2010. With the decade in its closing stages, a strange and disjointed musical era comes to an end, but not before Exploding In Sound returns with the biggest and most triumphant compilation yet… CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. Like the organ system that spreads nutrients our bodies can’t live without, helping fight disease, Exploding In Sound aims to do similar for your musical distribution network with the fourth installment of its acclaimed series. Through the nineteen track Circulatory System compilation, I aim to spread great new music to everyone interested in helping fight the disease that is tired old generic rock. It’s with the spreading of the compilation that we can combat the toxins being force fed to us with truly incredible new music that will prove beneficial for the mind, body, and soul. Featuring new music from some of the greatest independent bands in the world ...
