The Key: Interview w/ David Yow of The Jesus Lizard

Image
So, I had the opportunity to interview The Jesus Lizard 's legendary vocalist, David Yow . As it worked out, I had to take the call in my office at my day job, hoping that no sudden work-related emergencies would interrupt our conversation. Luckily, that didn't happen. This is my first article for Philadelphia's The Key , which is the editorial arm of 88.5 WXPN . Enjoy. photo by: Joshua Black Wilkins The Key  interview w/ David Yow Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Kicking Against The Pricks: Ian MacKaye & Marnie Stern

Image
Issue #12 of Kicking Against The Pricks has posted: Find it here . First and foremost for Issue #12, I scored an opportunity, (QUITE an opportunity), to interview the one and only Ian MacKaye . Before the interview even began, MacKaye asked me if I was recording the call and, if so, to please check the device and make sure it was audible. I checked it out and I could hear him. But, because I’m one to be laughed at by technology, the subsequent run that captured the complete interview also captured a ton of static. There are complete paragraphs worth of otherwise perfectly quotable stuff I could’ve used for this interview that were indecipherable. Completely indecipherable. So, I played the Q&A back over and over and over again, got down as much as I could, and shaped an article around it. What you’ll read is my most high profile interview, with an absolute hero of mine, condensed into a fraction of what the interview might’ve been had my recorder not glommed onto a ton of...

What I Heard This Morning: Ital & Touch People

Image
So, Daniel Martin-McCormick ( Mi Ami ) and Darren Keen ( The Show Is The Rainbow ), both of whom I've interviewed, are wrapped up in circuits, wires and plugs, generating electro-based side projects. Martin-McCormick, even before he converted Mi Ami from avant-garde noise rock to an electronic translation, worked in this medium as Sex Worker , so Ital shouldn't be that much of a stretch, though Ital seems to be a more enhanced and involved project.  Martin-McCormick released a three-song Ital album earlier this year via his own Lovers Rock label, Culture Clubs . Altered Zones recently posted a live set, which isn't a bad listen, and a video of the track, "Only for Tonight (Dubout/Saviour's Love Megamix)."    Ital - Live @ Shea Stadium by LiveatSheaStadium ITAL - ONLY FOR TONIGHT (Dubout/Saviour's Love Megamix) from 100% Silk on Vimeo . Them Crooked Vultures: It’s out there, so get consumin’...

I know that I’ve been rather aggressive with the Them Crooked Vultures coverage, but to my credit, they keep putting out video announcements with music. They should rename this band, Them Crooked YouTube Whores : Also, there’s an interview with Josh Homme over at the Record Store Day website. Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Interview: The Show Is The Rainbow

Orbit to Leslie Instamatic The Show Is The Rainbow Beep Beep Johnny Brenda’s Philadelphia, PA 4.13.09 Photo courtesy of Terrorbird Media Before he began performing his song “Mother And Son,” Darren Keen , (a.k.a. The Show Is The Rainbow ), explained to the evening’s crowd the song’s autobiographical significance. Apparently, back when fetal Keen was a mere presence in his mother’s womb, his face would get routinely pummeled by an endless number of strange dicks from the men she would bring home. “That’s physically impossible,” said one of a group of females by the soundboard, either missing the joke or just wanting her position heard. Soon after the intro, a faint unease surging through the audience, The Show Is The Rainbow began thrashing about off stage, shrieking into the microphone as his laptop carried out the tune. A projected animation depicted a crudely rendered cock aiming for a psychedelic Kubrick -ian vagina, which quickly switched to a malformed scribbled baby with an um...

Interview: dan le sac Vs. Scroobius Pip

B Dolan dan le sac Vs. Scroobius Pip M Room Philadelphia, PA 9.27.08 "…Go close to Scroobious Pip and say, Tell us all about yourself we pray — For as yet we can't make out in the least If you're Fish or Insect, or Bird or Beast." — Excerpt from The Scroobious Pip by Edward Lear "Thou shalt not worship pop idols Or, follow lost prophets…" — Excerpt from "Thou Shalt Always Kill" "You’re probably the only guy who knows." I was seated with British Electro-Hop/Spoken Word duo, dan le sac Vs. Scroobius Pip , at Philadelphia’s M Room one sunny Saturday afternoon, armed with a digital recorder, a little bit of beer courage and a nervously conceived list of questions. When they agreed to meet me for an interview, dan and Scroob were on their way into Philly after a two-night stint at New York’s Mercury Lounge. In the midst of a U.S. tour supporting the American release of their new album, Angles , beatmeister dan le sac made the above stateme...
