Bohren & Der Club Of Gore: "Plateau" (Lustmord cover)

Image
Pelagic Records will be releasing a suitably expansive box set in tribute to dark electronics maestro, Lustmord (a.k.a. Brian Williams). The set is called The Other , an encompassing title that includes Lustmord's 2008 LP [O T H E R] , two remix albums, and  The Others [Lustmord Deconstructed] , which is a 3-LP set of Lustmord covers carried out by an impressive roster of artists: Ulver, Enslaved, Godflesh, Zola Jesus, Steve Von Till, Ihsahn, Jaye Jayle, Jo Quail, Spotlights, and Mono to name a few. For the past day or so, I've wallowed in the darkness of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore's rendition of "Plateau", originally featured on Lustmord's 2009 LP, Beyond .  Not the most uplifting thing to be sonically enveloped by on a winter's day morning, but the chill is appropriate. Bohren & Der Club Of Gore essentially convert Lustmord's dense and Vantablack -level aural cavern into an uncomfortably dark and ominous lounge, incorporating their signature m...

For Fans of the Box — Engine Kid & Faust

Image
To whom it may interest,  A few announcements for fans of the box: Engine Kid Everything Left Inside Southern Lord Released: 6.12.21 (RSD 2021-Drop 1 — Yes, this is late) Appreciators of sunn O))) and Goatsnake know Greg Anderson. Prior to the release of their new 6-LP box set, Everything Left Inside , I'm embarrassed to admit that I had no idea about Engine Kid , a Seattle-based post-hardcore trio whose initial make-up had been composed of Anderson (vocals/guitar), Chris Vandebrooke (drummer) and Art Behrman (bassist). From the promo selections that I've been able to listen through, Engine Kid's Everything Left Inside fits nicely alongside the audibly distraught and naturally abrasive sounds of Unwound, and would've been an obsession of mine during their days of activity had I been aware of them.   Treated for now as a Record Store Day release, which occurred 6/12, a later version of the box set meant for international distribution will be issued at a later date.  In t...

Midweek Jazz — William Parker & Josh Johnson

Image
On what would have been John Coltrane's 94th birthday, some jazz releases to consider for this midweek entry… First, a 10-LP box set titled Migration of Silence Into and Out of the Tone World by bassist William Parker will be released on January 29th, 2021 via Centering Records and AUM Fidelity .  As a primer for this collection, a compilation of material extracted from the box set is available called Trencadís . Immediately evidentiary is that Parker's creative and compositional reach is excitingly vast. You can listen to that here:   Trencadís [ a selection from Migration of Silence Into and Out of The Tone World ] by William Parker Via Fully Altered Media: “The music in this boxed set is dedicated to all people in the world who are searching for freedom – those who want to eliminate hate, racism, sexism, greed and lies in their lifetime.” — William Parker That William Parker is a bassist, composer and bandleader of extraordinary spirit and imaginative drive is common know...

What's (Re)New — Thee Oh Sees / Oh Sees / OCS on 8-Track

Image
Photo Credit: 5Seven Records If you check out the 5Seven Records website right now, you'll be confronted with an annoyingly unreadable nod to the days of GeoCities web pages, vivid green and yellow paragraphs typed out in Times with inactive underlining placed as if joking with the user: "Is it a link? Nope!". As if to drive home antiquity, you'll also be shown some info regarding John Dwyer 's new boxset, which compiles 8-track versions of his work dated 2008 till 2018. This includes records from Thee Oh Sees , Oh Sees , and OCS . It also contains a zine. I imagine the circle jerk comprised of collectors that commenced following this news was significant and led to multiple floods and drownings. While I'm not thrilled with the prospect of an unplayable boxset, (which is the case unless you own an 8-track player), the artifact(s) itself is something to look at. The cool factor is undeniable and there was certainly a lot of work put into it, but its impr...

Mogwai: "The Lord is Out of Control" (Video)

Image
The Vocoder will be the new Auto Tune and it will be blessed by retro charm, which will make it hipster-appropriate, indie-credible and fully supported by PBR-scented neck beards everywhere.  Ah, I'm just talking shit. The typically awesome Mogwai released a new video for the single, "The Lord is Out of Control."  Expect to hear this within the confines of the band's upcoming new album, Rave Tapes , which will be out in late January via Sub Pop.  In addition to your normal formats (i.e. LP, CD, MP3, SUV, STD...etc. ), there's a special edition box set of Rave Tapes being released that's limited to 500 copies.  They're up for pre-order, so you may want to get yours now before some enterprising yung'un with daddy's credit card picks up a copy and tries to pimp it online for your firstborn or a handjob.  Here's the video: Now, look at the info, which was handed to me via email by the good people at Sub Pop. Watch Mogwai’s new vide...

Shopping For Records: The Clash's Sound System

Image
I guess this could be called the "only box set that matters," (and I'm sure once I publish that less than clever little comment, I'll find 77 just like it.)  To be released in the US in early September, The Clash 's upcoming discography-disguised-as-a-boombox set called Sound System , will be released alongside a new hits compilation, The Clash Hits Back .  I'm sure the box set will be very inexpensive, except not really. Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

CAN: "Waiting for the Streetcar" (Edit)

Image
The very seminal and experimental space rockers CAN will be releasing a 5-LP box set dubbed, The Lost Tapes , which is (quite obviously) five albums' worth of unreleased music.  It'd been shelved, byproduct of unfinished projects and unreleased B-sides.  This looks to be quite a collection. See a trailer for the album below and an edited version of the song, "Waiting for the Streetcar."  This info was lovingly offered by Mute. CAN THE LOST TAPES VINYL BOX SET OUT DECEMBER 4th, 2012 5 LP SET – 180g VINYL “More than a great listen, the set solidifies both Can’s oeuvre and their approach to music making as far-reaching influences." - New York Times “essential for any fan” - Under The Radar “a masterpiece in it’s own right” - Consequence of Sound “A startling discovery” - Q Mag Mute and Spoon are delighted to announce that, due to phenomenal demand, Can’s The Lost Tapes will be released as a 5 LP box set on 180g vinyl on December 4th, 2...

feedtime: I Wonder What's the Matter With Papa's Little Angel Child?

Image
I'm too familiar with the off-key noise rock blues of Australia's feedtime , though after hearing a few songs I'm more than interested in becoming better associated with their output.  Sub Pop will be releasing a 4 CD or LP compilation documenting their years with Aberrant Records and have provided all the information and linkage you see below.  Read on and sample some tracks. Sub Pop Records to release limted edition 4 CD & LP box set of the Aberrant years by feedtime on March 13, 2012 Photo Credit: Caroline Birkett "Interpretation is the master key" – Rick Click here to listen to your favorite feedtime songs according to Mark Arm . It starts around ‘78 or ‘79 in Sydney, Australia. feedtime evolved from this point. There was no “formation,” it just crept through a few people who believed in the same purpose. Rick and Allen met each other in February 1970 and became friends through circumstance and necessity. Both shared a connection to mu...

Shopping For Records #47 (Revisited): Beach Boys’ SMiLE Sessions Being Released... Now With DATE!

Image
Back in March, I got news about the Beach Boys ’ sessions of SMiLE being released as a box set . While I hope this “suitable for cashing in” version of the album doesn’t diminish the triumph that Brian Wilson ’s 2004 album deservedly afforded him, this release looks to provide more story to this already very legendary monument to pop genius and the crisis and subsequent redemption of an artist. A release date and playlist have been made available. All information below is courtesy of EMI and there's a ton of it: THE BEACH BOYS’ LEGENDARY SMiLE ALBUM SESSIONS TO BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 1 BY CAPITOL/EMI -- ART AND TRACKLISTS UNVEILED Never-Before-Released Original 1966-’67 Album Sessions Compiled for 2CD and Digital Packages and Deluxe, Expanded Box Set; Special Packages to be Available Exclusively from TheBeachBoys.com Official Beach Boys Music Videos to be Crowdsourced via Tongal’s First-Ever Music Video Initiative     "The most famous unfinished album in rock ...
