Bohren & Der Club Of Gore: "Plateau" (Lustmord cover)

Image
Pelagic Records will be releasing a suitably expansive box set in tribute to dark electronics maestro, Lustmord (a.k.a. Brian Williams). The set is called The Other , an encompassing title that includes Lustmord's 2008 LP [O T H E R] , two remix albums, and  The Others [Lustmord Deconstructed] , which is a 3-LP set of Lustmord covers carried out by an impressive roster of artists: Ulver, Enslaved, Godflesh, Zola Jesus, Steve Von Till, Ihsahn, Jaye Jayle, Jo Quail, Spotlights, and Mono to name a few. For the past day or so, I've wallowed in the darkness of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore's rendition of "Plateau", originally featured on Lustmord's 2009 LP, Beyond .  Not the most uplifting thing to be sonically enveloped by on a winter's day morning, but the chill is appropriate. Bohren & Der Club Of Gore essentially convert Lustmord's dense and Vantablack -level aural cavern into an uncomfortably dark and ominous lounge, incorporating their signature m...

Music Pounding In My Head: Earthen Sea & Lawrence English

Image
Earthen Sea An Act of Love kranky Released: 2.17.17 Earthen Sea ’s An Act of Love was conceived as a meditation on a quiet night in a city. The solo tag of Jacob Long , former bassist for the jarring D.C. band Black Eyes and the ritualistic dance punk band Mi Ami , Earthen Sea constructs atmospheric pulse-scapes which, at times, pose ethereally charged sounds and soft and distant textures against club beats. This is especially true of “About That Time,” its pensive disposition layered and slowly realized next to the beat that pushes everything forward. While contemplative in mood, there is a calm and a bliss to this work, its introductory track, “The Present Mist,” offering entry into Long’s perspective, which seems more concerned with the faraway gaze as opposed to the granular exploration. Romance is exchanged for grit and there’s so much air here despite sounding so full. Long’s attempts at conveying what he calls, “the concept and reality of being out in the city at ...

Music Pounding In My Head: thisquietarmy

thisquietarmy Métamorphose Grains of Sand Released: 2.13.17 For those relatively familiar with the often unsettling nature of thisquietarmy 's ambient output, Métamorphose , the project's latest release, may sound a tad relaxed.  While molding tonal environs that do much to lull ones conscious self into sedate levels of being with the opening track, " Tu aimerais parfois te retirer de ta matière," t he array of echoing signals in "En y glissant ton esprit comme dans un gant neuf " brings to mind some of Cluster 's earliest sounds motifs, fields of sonic grit arriving slowly in an effort to swallow up the expanse.  It's an immersive listen to say the least and once the 11+ minutes of "Tu manierais ta peau afin de l’attendrir" begin to take shape, the rather somber pluck of reverberating strings calling out against its hazy backdrop, you're thankful to have an excuse for the moment of contemplation or personal reflection this track...
