The Beatles: Only A Northern Song (Yes, this is a promotion for the restoring and re-release of Yellow Submarine.)

Image
The Beatles ' animated psychedelic fairytale, Yellow Submarine , will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray this May as its 1999 incarnation has gone out of print.  Having been restored by hand, (a detail I lifted from the press release below), the new version of the film will be released with a lot of geek fodder like cels, drawings and interviews.  Also, the movie's 1999 companion release, Yellow Submarine Songtrack , will be reissued as well, (though the actual Yellow Submarine album is all you really need.) All information is brought to you courtesy of EMI.  THE BEATLES’ YELLOW SUBMARINE FEATURE FILM RESTORED FOR MAY RELEASE ON DVD AND BLU-RAY; FILM’S SONGTRACK ALBUM TO BE REISSUED Once upon a time…or maybe twice…there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland… London – March 20, 2012 – The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine , has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release on May 28 (May 29 in North America). Fantômas: Director’s Cut Live DVD Trailers

I mentioned in July that Fantômas was releasing a DVD of a performance of their brilliant Director’s Cut album. Well, the DVD is out and some trailers have surfaced: Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehea

Shining: Live Blackjazz

Image
Blackjazz was one of the most abrasive, ridiculous and brilliantly crafted records to come out of 2010 in my often too-humble opinion.  Norway's Shining has taken their live act and committed it to DVD, Live Blackjazz being the result.  The band recently released a trailer for the DVD.  All info comes courtesy of Indie Recordings . You can read my review of Shining's Blackjazz at No Ripcord. SEE THE FIRST CLIP FROM LIVE BLACKJAZZ For the first time ever, the raw energy of their legendary live performances has been captured on tape in a setting organized solely by the band itself. Produced by the multi-talented front-man Munkeby , and backed by the same mixing and mastering team as on their previous Blackjazz studio album, we could not get a truer version of what Blackjazz is meant to be. Straight from the horse’s mouth, this is the new standard that bands will strive to match for the next 10 or 20 years to come. See the first clip from the DVD here: ...

Kicking Against The Pricks: 1991: The Year Punk Broke (20th Anniversary Edition)

Image
I was very excited to finally score an opportunity to see 1991: The Year Punk Broke, which is now reissued on DVD in a 20th anniversary package.  This concert film featuring Sonic Youth and a still obscure Nirvana had been out of print for a long time.   Check out issue #11 of Kicking Against The Pricks. 1991: The Year Punk Broke (20th Anniversary Edition) Dave Markey We Got Power Films Originally Released: 1992 Reissued: 2011   Kicking Against The Pricks review Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

1991: The Year Punk Broke (The Bank)

Image
Dave Markey 's long out-of-print concert documentary, 1991: The Year Punk Broke , is being reissued on DVD.  Sort of a grunge-era Woodstock , 1991: The Year Punk Broke features Sonic Youth , Nirvana , Dinosaur Jr. , Babes In Toyland , Gumball and The Ramones during a two-week festival run just before alternative music peaked and breached the confines of the underground. A trailer for the documentary was recently made available. A review will (hopefully) be featured at Kicking Against The Pricks. Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

TV On The Radio’s Nine Types Of Light's "Visual Re-Imagining"...

Image
TV On The Radio ’s Nine Types Of Light is out today (4.12) and, obviously, it’s a big deal. As a companion piece to the album, TVOTR’s Tunde Adebimpe directed a film which, according to YouTube’s write-up, “is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album.” In cynical corporatized MTV-addled post- Reagan era speak, (or, how I read it), “visual re-imagining” means grab bag for video marketers to exploit with potential for single saturation. This is sort of like their Moonwalker , though TVOTR do their best to unite art and commerce with self-important interviews, psychedelically colorful cut paper animation, amateurishly shot dance parties and band members embroiled in antiquated virtual reality apparatus. I recognize a cast member from the Parenthood TV show. The film’s pretension and potential marketability notwithstanding, Nine Types Of Light (the music version) sounds like it’s worth a listen or two. I’m enjoying...

Kicking Against The Pricks: Kill Your Idols

Image
My first music documentary review.  Kicking Against The Pricks was in need of some content for their music documentary section, so I volunteered a few hundred words or more for Kill Your Idols .  I'd seen this documentary not that long ago, and I figured I'd give it another viewing.  No Wave has remained an excruciatingly under-exposed era of punk rock's development, but also one of its more influential and interesting.  Also, being that the era's earliest contributors wind up opining about the bands that have followed in their footsteps, history is followed by some very caustic commentary.  It's worth a look.  In the meantime, check out the review and the latest issue of Kicking Against The Pricks. Fund The Arts and Promote The Overlooked: LOST ROCKERS

Image
Filmmaker, Paul Rachman , and writer, Steve Blush , the guys that brought American Hardcore to the masses, are working on a new documentary called, LOST ROCKERS . LOST ROCKERS basically exposes the unexposed, examining forgotten or overlooked musicians that, somehow, got lost in the “star-maker” shuffle. Rachman and Blush are in the process of making this film, four interviews with Gloria Jones , Jake Holmes , David Peel and Dr. Israel in the can, and they need outside support to fund the project. They need $15,000 by May 19th. You can find out more at Kickstarter.com . Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Beatles-centric Entry # Whatever: “The Beatles On Record...”

Image
The History Channel will be premiering a new Beatles documentary entitled, The Beatles On Record , which follows the Fab Four as they evolve in the studio. Having already been broadcast by the BBC earlier this year, it will air on Wednesday, November 25th for U.S. audiences. While the amazing Beatles Anthology docu-series perfectly captured The Beatles from their beginning to the end, a documentary solely devoted to the band in the studio is something I’d love to check out. Inasmuch as the new Beatles reissues better-demonstrate the truth to their sound, this documentary should explain exactly how groundbreaking they were, confirming their fully-integrated importance to the musicscape that’s followed. ©2009 A&E Television Networks.
