"Every Motherfucker Is Your Brother" by Oort Smog

Image
"Every Motherfucker Is Your Brother". This is the sort of combination of words that I long to find buried in the brittle pages of some forgotten book of vulgar proverbs or pulled from the broken shards of the evening's takeout fortune cookie. Perhaps this five-word bit of excellence was the work of some once-aspirational, albeit failed, author, unhappy to be toiling in the marketplace of meaningless phrases and bland advice found within the confines of often-discarded cookies who found inspiration one day and followed through.  However, this phrase isn't a proverb nor is it a fortune, but the title track of a single-piece 12" by the duo Oort Smog, an effort by multi-instrumentalist Patrick Shiroishi and drummer Mark Kimbrell. For now, a less than three-minute clip is available as "Every Motherfucker" and showcases a bit of percussive prog-jazz, loose enough at moments for the brass to scribble outside the lines on occasion but never at the expense of th...

The Week's Mixtape (SIDE A) — Tomato Flower, Sea Change, El Ten Eleven, AEVITERNE, Low, Die Wilde Jagd, Maya Shenfield

Image
Side A — Assembled 1/3-1/7 Following the turbulence of the Holidays and the excessive work schedules leading up to them, music continues to be my long sought-after balm for stress and the monotony of corporate drone'dom. Side A for the first week of January is light and loud, meditative or necessarily aggro. I'm happily excited about some of the records and singles I've had the opportunity to sample so far. Is it naive to assume this trend will continue well into 2023? Probably, but I'm content for now.  Enjoy…  ______________________________________________________________________ Tomato Flower : "Red Machine" (via Ramp Local) Bandcamp — https://tomatoflower.bandcamp.com/album/gold-arc Ramp Local — https://ramplocal.com Gold Arc releases 2/11/22 ______________________________________________________________________ Sea Change : "Is There Anybody There" (via Stereo Sanctity) Twitter — https://twitter.com/SeaChangeartist Shapes Recordings — https...

Alexander Noice: "Affectation"

Image
Call this one a pleasant surprise: the first few seconds of Alexander Noice 's latest single, "Affectation," featured on his upcoming new LP NOICE , indicated that I would be treated to a shrill vocal loop shoehorned into an anemic space bar-enabled rally of bleeps and tin cymbals. Such was not the case as the effects and vocals flourished under the composer's direction, given purpose as syncopated percussion and math-plucked melodies added the right amount of urgency. "Affectation'"s near 7-minutes is a rush of instrumental and vocal arrangement, its academia and soul culminating in a calm saxophone line (played by Gavin Templeton ) that emerges a little past the midway mark. It's at that point where I was sold. NOICE is scheduled to release on August 23rd, 2019 via Orenda Records . Check out the track below. All info and links are courtesy of Clandestine Services. NOICE presents a futuristic sonic landscape in a riling, cinematic albu...

And So I Watch You From Afar: "Wasps"

Image
Were I forced to come up with a two-word summary of And So I Watch You From Afar 's newest single, "Wasps," those words would probably be "circular anthems."  The constant arpeggios and choral harmonizing are dizzying to say the least, a wasp in flight possibly the basis for its immediacy and motion.   You can listen to the song below. And So I Watch You From Afar is releasing a new album called Heirs on May 5th via Sargent House.  For information on the release, please scroll below.  All news, dates, music and links were provided by Us/Them Group.   And So I Watch You From Afar: tracks from forthcoming album Heirs cleared for posting Listen to & share "Wasps" HERE + "Run Home" HERE Northern Ireland's And So I Watch You From Afar premiered a new track from their forthcoming album Heirs yesterday via The Fader.
