Kicking Against The Pricks: 1991: The Year Punk Broke (20th Anniversary Edition)

Image
I was very excited to finally score an opportunity to see 1991: The Year Punk Broke, which is now reissued on DVD in a 20th anniversary package.  This concert film featuring Sonic Youth and a still obscure Nirvana had been out of print for a long time.   Check out issue #11 of Kicking Against The Pricks. 1991: The Year Punk Broke (20th Anniversary Edition) Dave Markey We Got Power Films Originally Released: 1992 Reissued: 2011   Kicking Against The Pricks review Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Toro Y Moi: Still Sound (Live)

I posted Toro Y Moi 's "Still Sound" a few months ago .  His album, Underneath The Pine , (in spite of its rather awful cover), has been garnering high marks.  One has nothing to do with the other as my meager contributions, reviews and posts factor minimally next to the music sites and blogs music fans actually read, but I did receive this clip of Toro Y Moi performing "Still Sound" live in Washington D.C. The Sweetlife Festival , which will happen May 1st, has been apparently preceded by occasional live shows put on by the festival's promoters.  This clip was recorded April 14th in Logan Circle. SXSW: The year in posters...

Professionally, I'm a graphic designer, though I don't do much actual "designing" in my line of work. Matriculating at an art college left me few avenues for vocation, but I've always been drawn to poster art, even before I knew what graphic design was. Part of what I love about music is its visual accompaniment: show flyers, record covers, t-shirt design and other concertgoer ephemera or printed bits of historic matter. SXSW is upon us and, with it, my inbox is swelling with announcements of appearances from record labels and PR firms alike. I even got an invite this year, but money's short so that dream was short-lived. With that in mind, I figured I'd dedicate an entry to this year's SXSW poster art. So, consider this art-meets-performance schedule-meets-record label and PR promotion. Please note that I don't have much information regarding the artists of these posters, so if any information becomes available, or if the artists themselves ha...
