Kicking Against The Pricks (Sorta): Sunn O))) at the Union Transfer in 2012

Image
A year ago today, I attended a Sunn O))) concert at the Union Transfer in Philadelphia. The experience was to be written up and submitted to Kicking Against The Pricks as a concert review, but that didn't happen. Kicking Against The Pricks has been, unfortunately, inactive for some time now, so the review was never published online. Call it self-indulgence, but I figured it would be cool to publish the review here as it's been a full year since the show. Sunn O))) Dead in the Dirt T.O.M.B. 9.5.12 Union Transfer (Philadelphia, PA) I’ve found it difficult to explain in as succinct a way as possible how Sunn O))) works as a concept, let alone as a band. The sonically dense and intensely austere duo formed by Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson have constructed a ritualized expression, allowed to transmit to live audiences via ominous and enormous drones that don’t seem possible to consider until you experience them. The albums are one thing, but when your ribs ratt...

Contributors to Kicking Against The Pricks were asked to select their own #1 album for 2011 and submit a review.  Originally, this was supposed to be treated as a "12 days of Christmas" feature with one review a day being posted as the countdown to Christmas continued, but there were not enough submissions to make that happen.  The articles were instead used for Issue #15, which is up for perusal. I selected Attention Please by Boris . Issue #15 of Kicking Against The Pricks is up. You can find that here . Kicking Against The Pricks: Ian MacKaye & Marnie Stern

Image
Issue #12 of Kicking Against The Pricks has posted: Find it here . First and foremost for Issue #12, I scored an opportunity, (QUITE an opportunity), to interview the one and only Ian MacKaye . Before the interview even began, MacKaye asked me if I was recording the call and, if so, to please check the device and make sure it was audible. I checked it out and I could hear him. But, because I’m one to be laughed at by technology, the subsequent run that captured the complete interview also captured a ton of static. There are complete paragraphs worth of otherwise perfectly quotable stuff I could’ve used for this interview that were indecipherable. Completely indecipherable. So, I played the Q&A back over and over and over again, got down as much as I could, and shaped an article around it. What you’ll read is my most high profile interview, with an absolute hero of mine, condensed into a fraction of what the interview might’ve been had my recorder not glommed onto a ton of...

Kicking Against The Pricks: Kill Your Idols

Image
My first music documentary review.  Kicking Against The Pricks was in need of some content for their music documentary section, so I volunteered a few hundred words or more for Kill Your Idols .  I'd seen this documentary not that long ago, and I figured I'd give it another viewing.  No Wave has remained an excruciatingly under-exposed era of punk rock's development, but also one of its more influential and interesting.  Also, being that the era's earliest contributors wind up opining about the bands that have followed in their footsteps, history is followed by some very caustic commentary.  It's worth a look.  In the meantime, check out the review and the latest issue of Kicking Against The Pricks.
