Notes From The Record Room: Coming Up For Air / Off Pause / Ipecac / #RSD2019

60, 65, 55, 67… If you want to know why I've been silent for some of March and most of April, those are the number of hours I've had to work for past few weeks, my laptop open till midnight most nights and my weekends justifiably left to tend to dad/husband/homeowner things. I've been spread a tad thin, not too reliable on the home front or available for anything social while ever ready to take on whatever day job-related task handed to me. With that said, writing hasn't been a priority lately. Which sucks because I've still been listening to so much good shit that I want to write about.  My hope is that I'll be able to spare an hour here or there to catch up on what I've been hearing for the remaining weeks. The avalanche of work requests and deadlines to meet have thankfully subsided for the time being, so I'd like there to be some activity in the weeks ahead. Though, I'll be honest, with the increased popularity of vlogs and podcasts, ...

Kaada/Patton: "Red Rainbow"

Image
A patiently composed and theatrically stylish new single from Kaada/Patton has surfaced called "Red Rainbow."  This is the first single from the duo's upcoming release, Bacteria Cult , which is the first LP spawned from the collaborative efforts of John Kaada and Mike Patton since 2004's Romances .  With the mood of a thriller, the pace of which eventually culminates into a rather sinister finale, "Red Rainbow" is performed by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra .  Patton's vocal melody adds character to the composition, as if to add an air of distinction.  Despite its dimension of impending dread, its captivating tone and rich undercurrents of zig-zagging harmony offer much for the ear to absorb.   Bacteria Cult is currently available for pre-order.  You can listen to the track below.  All info and links were provided by Speakeasy PR. tētēma (Mike Patton/Anthony Pateras): "Tenz"

Image
tētēma is a new project from Mike Patton and composer Anthony Pateras . Ipecac Recordings will be issuing the duo's new album, Geocidal , which will be out December 9th and a sample of what the album will offer has been revealed.  "Tenz" has the feel of ritualized dance and trance modes revealing shades of On The Corner era Miles Davis and even some rhythmic patterns that sound akin to Cibo Matto 's Viva! La Woman (I'm thinking of its opening track, "Apple").  Pushing the trance comparison a bit, the track also contains what could be considered "drop" sections, few second length pauses followed by heavy blankets of sound, not to mention Patton's heightened vocal.  Check out the track and read some info on Geocidal , all of which has been provided by Speakeasy PR. tētēma STREAM "TENZ" FROM DEBUT ALBUM, GEOCIDAL   NEW DUO FROM ANTHONY PATERAS AND MIKE PATTON San Francisco, Oct. 30, 2014 – tētēma, a new duo featuring Aus...

2013 will mean a new album from Tomahawk .  It will be called Oddfellows and it will be the first album from the band since 2007's Anonymous .  "Stone Letter" is its first single and Pitchfork has premiered the video. The Inbox Giveth: Mike Patton/Luciano Berio

Image
Mike Patton/Luciano Berio Laborintus II Ipecac Recordings Released: 7.3.12 In 2010, along with the Brussels based Ictus Ensemble and the choral chamber choir, Nederlands Kamerkoor , Mike Patton acted as narrator for a live performance of Italian composer Luciano Berio ’s 1965 musical piece, Laborintus II . The performance was held at the Holland Festival, which also premiered Berio’s performance of Laborintus II for Dutch audiences in 1972. As further tribute, Patton has released the Ictus Ensemble/Nederlands Kamerkoor performance as a live album through Ipecac Recordings . Based on a poem by Edoardo Sanguineti , Berio’s own version renamed as the writing’s sequel, (which was also meant to acknowledge the 700th anniversary of Danté ’s birth), Labortinus II is delivered in three parts, which are apparently three separate voices. The majority of the piece is in Italian, (with maybe a sentence or two uttered in English), so I’m incapable of deciphering the narrative a...

Mike Patton: New Movie/New Tomahawk

Image
Mike Patton remains on a scoring kick, having been selected to score The Place Beyond The Pines , a new movie from Blue Valentine director, Derek Cianfrance .  And, apparently, a new Tomahawk album is in the works, which could release later this summer.  Excited about that possibility to be sure. From Speakeasy PR: MIKE PATTON SCORING THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES Photo credit: Jay Blakesberg Jan. 9, 2011, San Francisco - Mike Patton ( Faith No More , Tomahawk , Mr. Bungle ) has been selected by writer/director Derek Cianfrance ( Blue Valentine ) to provide the score for The Place Beyond The Pines , which stars Ryan Gosling , Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes . Patton, who rose to prominence as a teenager as the front man for Faith No More and is known as one of music's most eclectic musicians, has done a series of scores over the past few years including the Italian drama A Solitude of Prime Numbers , Crank 2: High Voltage and the short film A Perfect Place . ...

Spin said of Kang's most recent Ipecac release, 2007's Athlantis : "Think the monolith scene from 2001 as rendered by Mr. Bungle and you're almost there."     PopMatters said Kang "...inhabits other worlds so the rest of us don't have to." While Athlantis is a choral piece inspired by Renaissance era literature and philosophy, The Narrow Garden is inspired by the natural world.  "I composed most ...

Fantômas: Director’s Cut Live DVD Trailers

Image
I mentioned in July that Fantômas was releasing a DVD of a performance of their brilliant Director’s Cut album. Well, the DVD is out and some trailers have surfaced: Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehea

Fantômas: The Omen (Ave Satani)

Image
The Director’s Cut was released in 2001, ex- Faith No More and Mr. Bungle madman Mike Patton ’s free metal abstraction Fantômas enjoying metallic reign and reconsideration over a wonderful selection of horror/sci-fi/classic film scores. This was the band’s second album following the jaunty noise freaks of Fantômas (Amenza al Mundo) (1999), which was then succeeded by the surgical epic Delìrium Cordìa (2004) and a metal-infused interpretation of cartoon scores called Suspended Animation (2005), (dork moment), and The Director’s Cut stands as the band’s best piece of work. Granted this seems a slight at the band seeing as the material performed isn’t theirs, but the lengths at which Patton connects the Fantômas dynamic to composers like Henry Mancini , Bernard Herrmann , Jerry Goldsmith and Ennio Morricone shows a staggering appreciation and knowledge of this music. Instead of creating a novelty album whose appeal wears away with every snicker-inducing listen, Fantômas creat...
