Woven Bones: I’ve Gotta Get

Image
Woven Bones has signed to the Hardly Art label and, in recognition of the move, a new 7” from the Bones is being released on August 10th, “I’ve Gotta Get” b/w “Hey Kid.” “I’ve Gotta Get” has a lot of that lo-fi smog that seems to have qualified as “commonplace” lately, but I love the surf timbre guitars and the Stooges -level of resigned energy they seem to generate. ”I’ve Gotta Get” I still have to pick up their recently released album, In and Out and Back Again . It’s on my list. If you’re interesting in seeing Woven Bones live, Insound recently brought the band in for their Insound Sessions series: http://www.insound.com/sessions/ Tour dates via press release: 08.06.10 – Austin TX at the United States of Art Authority (w/ Happy Birthday, Residual Echoes) 08.07.10 – Dallas TX at the Nightmare 08.10.10 – Denver CO at Hi Dive (w/ Woodsman) 08.11.10 – Salt Lake City at Kilby Court 08.12.10 – Boise ID at Neurolux 08.13.10 – Portland OR at Plan B (SMMR BMMR) 08.14.10 – Seattle WA at ...

What I Heard This Morning: Boogie Boarder

Image
As Wavves, Vivian Girls, No Age and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart seem at the forefront of a noise pop/lo-fi revitalization, Brooklyn's Boogie Boarder seem set to join the movement with their second album, Pizza Hero . Dig that album title? Anyway, I liked their track, "Bio Hassle," enough that I figured I'd post it. Thudding bass amperage and squeaking surf guitar rhythms. Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Lux Interior (1946-2009)

Image
Psychobilly hero and Cramps frontman Lux Interior passed on at the age of 62. A B-rated monster of a schtick to go along with his intense showmanship, Lux Interior ( Eric Lee Purkhiser ) and his wife, Poison Ivy ( Kristy Wallace ) formed The Cramps in 1976, just in time for punk rock’s emergence into CBGB mania. Boasting more of a rockabilly-surf-infused and sexy crawl, The Cramps stuck out as Bela Lugosi 's variation on Johnny Cash and Link Wray . If you’ve never heard Songs The Lord Taught Us or Psychedelic Jungle , it would be behoove you to find them, throw down the money and listen. Or, if you want a decent overview of early Cramps, the compilation Bad Music For Bad People is worthwhile. The Cramps perform “Human Fly” - 9.25.93 In the song “Garbage Man,” Interior sums himself up perfectly: "...Yeah it's just what you need when you're down in the dumps One half hillbilly and one half punk Big long legs and one big mouth The hottest thing from the north to...

Don’t Listen to Brian Wilson On A Bad Day…

Image
Brian Wilson The Lucky Old Sun Capitol Released: 9.2.08 Rating: 6.25 out of 10 Love letter to L.A. Whatever. Cubicle bound on a cold and grey December afternoon, confronted with an infuriatingly long commute amidst an abundance of retail-hungry Christmas shoppers keeping me frozen in a line of traffic, keeping me from going home, Brian Wilson ’s latest foray into California rock operatic cuteness, The Lucky Old Sun , is tantamount to a denture-impediment of a “nyah nyah.” Is it somewhat of a slap in the face that Wilson morphed a 1949 blues song, (originally written by Beasley Smith and Haven Gillespie ), perfectly illustrating the desire to be anyone, or anything, else in the face of backbreaking hardship, into this ridiculously upbeat ode to Los Angeles, interspersing reprise after reprise before and following banally conceived spoken word narratives and otherwise inconsequential and sentimental crap? Think SMiLE II , with emphasis on the “II:” an unrealized attempt at duplicati...

Cambodians Don't Surf...

Image
Dengue Fever Venus On Earth M80/Birdman Released: 1.22.08 Rating: 8 out of 10 Years ago, when American and British radio was pervading the war-torn landscapes of Vietnam, Cambodia was also on the receiving end of these broadcasts. Hearing the sounds of surf and psychedelic rock n’ roll, some inspired Cambodian musicians incorporated this Western influence into their own traditional music, creating a new form of Cambodian pop. When Pol Pot came to power in the mid-70s, the Western influence was eradicated and a lot of these musicians were killed. Luckily, some of the recordings survived. Los Angeles sextet, Dengue Fever , rises from these ashes. Venus On Earth is their 3rd LP. Listening to Venus On Earth , you realize that some of its credit is undeniably owed to the historic events from which this music is born. It doesn’t stray too far from an established rhythm at any time, nor does it seem to offer any fresh ideas to contemporize itself (aside from mentioning “ Ambien ” and “e...
