Boris: "Drowning By Numbers"

Image
It was announced that Boris, whose creative versatility I don't think can be matched at this point, are releasing a new LP in January of 2022 via Sacred Bones. Within two seconds of this announcement, I was on the website ready to pre-order the blue and white starburst LP variant of the album, which is titled W . The lead single "Drowning By Numbers" is a notable departure from the Discharge-level speed of last year's excellent NO , minimally driven by bass throbs and dark ambience. As was the case with the group's pop-centric endeavor Attention Please , released in 2011 via Sargent House, all vocal duties for W are handled by singer/bassist Wata. I don't think it's necessarily an exaggeration to claim that W will be the infinity'ith LP to be released by Boris, but it's worth noting that this will be the first Boris LP released by Sacred Bones . Release date is January 21st, 2022. Check out the video below: All info and links are courtesy of Ste...

Online Sounds: Boris — “鏡 -Zerkalo-“ & NO

Image
Boris NO Released: 7.3.20 Boris ain't fuckin' around. The band's latest release, NO , was released as a digital LP on Bandcamp and finds the trio conjuring amplified gargantua via Discharge-blessed tempos ("Anti-Gone"), mountain-crumbling doom-laden immensity ("鏡 -Zerkalo-"), or softening sheets of ethereal tonality ("HxCxHxC -Perforation Line-"). NO functions well as an immediately gratifying and unbridled release of bullshit-free guitar-n-drum relayed energy. NO by Boris Sincerely,Letters From A Tapehead

Boris: "Absolutego"

Image
As announcement for their upcoming new album, Boris dials up the power-sludge with "Absolutego," the first single from the Sargent House release, Dear . With its title borrowing from the band's 1996 album of the same name, "Absolutego" is somewhat of a return to form for Boris, their last few albums a series of pop-fueled excursions, hook-heavy and melodic.  Having just toured for the 10-year anniversary of their much-celebrated album, Pink , Boris's want of muddied distortion seems to owe itself to that series of shows.  Its oozing bass tone and rattling percussion generates a welcome mire of viscous delight.  With a stinging cry from guitarist Wata , her notes ascend beyond the muck midway just before the song shifts into doom-laden shriek and battery.  It's damn near perfect. Dear is up for pre-order here , available in LP and CD formats.  The official U.S. release date is July 14th via Sargent House .   Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

Boris   Pink (Deluxe Edition) Sargent House Released: 7.8.16 Originally released: 2005 via Diwphalanx Records (Japan); 2006 via Southern Lord Recordings (U.S.) * I'm in the midst of finishing up a review of the Pink reissue for I Heart Noise .  I'm hoping to have that out very soon. ** While the tendency for Boris to genre-hop isn't necessarily something one can glean from a single track, this aspect of the band makes them difficult to readily categorize and I think Isabella picked up on that.   Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

What's (Re)New?: Boris's Pink

Image
It was with Boris 's essential 2006 release, Pink , that I'd first become aware of the group's versatile brand of rock, drone and metal excellence.  Hard to believe that that was ten years ago.  In recognition of the album's 10th anniversary, Sargent House is releasing deluxe editions of Pink in both triple-LP and double-CD formats.  Along with the original release, a volume of unreleased tracks dubbed Forbidden Songs will be included.  A selection from the Forbidden portion of the reissue was posted at Pitchfork called, "Are You Ready?".  You can give it a listen and then read about the reissue below.  All info was provide by Us/Them Group. In addition to the reissue, Boris will be performing Pink live for U.S. audiences.  Tour dates are posted below.  And they're touring with Earth !  BORIS announce 10th anniversary Pink album deluxe reissue, U.S. tour performing Pink in its entirety Hear & share "Are You Ready?" Shopping For Records: Boris & Merzbow's Gensho

Image
Boris may currently be the most versatile rock/metal band, somehow managing to adapt to multiple musical disciplines in order to either cultivate some new territory for themselves to explore or to assume collaborative/backing band roles seamlessly.  Lately, they've been somewhat of a pop kick, but seem to be retreating from this a bit with a new release working with a familiar partner, Merzbow .  The results of this union, Gensho , is an ambitious 4-LP set being released by Relapse Records on March 18th.  Based on the strength of the lead single, a highly distorted and wildly scrambled drone track called "Huge," I'm looking forward to giving this monster a listen.   You can sample the track "Huge" below and also check out a trailer for the release. New collaborations were announced this week.  Here are details regarding an upcoming new Boris/Merzbow release, Gensho , as well as an upcoming LP from The Body & Krieg , (apparently being called The Body & Krieg ), which I'm positive will provide this Winter with a soundtrack oh so very desolate.  No tracks yet, but they'll be posted once they're made available. The Boris/Merzbow info was provided by Relapse Records. Boris: "Vanilla"

Image
Chameleon-esque sludge rockers Boris are putting out a new album later this June called Noise .  Lots of hope in that title and some evident delivery.  The band just issued a new video called "Vanilla" that is anything but: a pop-conducive hook flanked by post-hardcore nuance and a gratifying solo-laden stride as its second act. The video was pulled from Stereogum and all the info was provided by Us/Them Group.  The band's 2011 releases, Heavy Rocks and Attention Please , were reviewed at No Ripcord . Boris: Flood performances and tour-only release

Today in "sucks to be you, Philadelphia" news, it was announced today that Boris will carrying out a small tour of the U.S. featuring performances of their album, Flood , in its entirety.  Naturally, because Philadelphia isn't a music city by any stretch, the band will not be stopping here.  Adding insult to injury, a tour-only exclusive release will be sold during the tour. Kicking Against The Pricks: Boris

Image
Contributors to Kicking Against The Pricks were asked to select their own #1 album for 2011 and submit a review.  Originally, this was supposed to be treated as a "12 days of Christmas" feature with one review a day being posted as the countdown to Christmas continued, but there were not enough submissions to make that happen.  The articles were instead used for Issue #15, which is up for perusal. I selected Attention Please by Boris . Issue #15 of Kicking Against The Pricks is up. You can find that here . Boris: Flare

Image
The inimitable and super-prolific Boris are releasing their third album this year, the appropriately and humorously titled New Album . Probably the most fascinating and risky creative transition heard this year can be found in the grooves of Attention Please , Boris’ foray into post-punk/new wave/pop influenced rock brilliance that, while deviating from their usual experiments with drone and sonic mire, basically allows the band to demonstrate their versatility and grow musically with little or no boundaries. New Album revisits and reworks tracks from both Attention Please and their more hard rock-oriented other release, Heavy Rocks (2011). Rolling Stone, (Seriously, why let Rolling Stone handle this one?), is streaming their latest single off of New Album , “Flare.” “Spoon,” was recently posted by Pitchfork. A limited edition version of the New Album will be out late November for Record Store Day (Back to Black Friday) through Sargent House. Otherwise, release is set for...
