Music Pounding In My Head: Taiwan Housing Project

Image
Taiwan Housing Project Veblen Death Mask Kill Rock Stars Released: 5.7.17 I’ll admit that I was bombarded by an internalized slew of questions, all of which I had no answer for, that seemed to transpire all at once while I was listening to Taiwan Housing Project ’s Veblen Death Mask . My brain, which was responding interestingly to much of what I was hearing, started off with, “What happened to the Butthole Surfers ?” And it wasn’t asked as “Where did they go? Are they still alive?” It was more of a “ponder the void they’ve left and pity the generation now celebrating the 10 years since so-and-so bestowed upon us that forgettable soft rock/crying folk record that did little more than encourage beard growth: why are we content to have celebrated indie rock’s demise?” We live in a strange time. And this isn’t an opportunity to inject political commentary and/or punditry into a record review, but instead offer a light assessment of what our current landscape looks like: ...

Music Pounding In My Head: Parlor Walls

Image
Parlor Walls Opposites Northern Spy Records Released: 3.17.17 The Azerrad -approved outskirts of rock n’ roll music seem a largely accessible landscape since the days of tape trading and ‘zines, that subculture of miscreants and weirdos who, for a period of decades, subsisted on fodder cultivated by DIY record labels and performers who operated a little to the left of the synthetic tastes catered to by the American spoon feed. While rock music has lost relevance to a populace auto-tuned out and engaged by karaoke television, those outskirts still thrive and produce smart, thoughtful, and provocative sounds, aided by the tools granted them by the Internet to enable limitless self-promotion. This is necessary in post-truth America, especially when the powers-that-be seem poised to strip away funding for public broadcasting and the arts. Listening to Parlor Walls ’ debut LP, Opposites , I thought about how I would’ve interpreted an album like this twenty or thirty years ago, its...

What I Heard This Morning: Nisennenmondai

Image
Nisennenmondai is a three-piece from Japan whose propulsive art rock mutations seem to derive mainly from the No Wave era groups like DNA and Mars , whose own caustic brands of anti-melody had been inspired largely by the urban ruin of late-70s New York City, not to mention the desire to simply play music that had no clear ancestor, namely traceable roots to rock, blues, jazz, funk...etc., (though I could argue some connection to free jazz).  I'd also cite the psychedelic and repetitious elements of groups like Neu! and Can as possible influences as well as post-punk's utilization of dub reggae.   Nisennenmondai has apparently been playing together since 1999, so it embarrasses me a little to be discovering this group almost twenty years later.  But, the tracks I sampled from the group's recent release #N/A warranted acknowledgement. On September 2nd, Nisennenmondai will be releasing the #6 EP, its single track pulled from the sessions that birthed #N/A ....

Shopping For Records: Swans reissue White Light from the Mouth of Infinity and Love of Life

Image
Young Gods Records will be releasing two new Swans reissues on December 4th, White Light from the Mouth of Infinity and Love of Life .  So, to anyone reading this, my 39th birthday is right before Christmas if you were looking for gift ideas.  White Light from the Mouth of Infinity and Love of Life were originally released in '91 and '92 respectively, likely buried beneath a greasy, sweaty wannabe-subculture driven by teen angst, flannel, alt-marketing and MTV.  I know these albums definitely slipped past my radar since I was as immersed in all the alt-mania as everyone else was at the time.  First runs of the albums will be issued as limited edition box sets with CD, vinyl and digital versions to follow once the sets have been bought up.  You can read more about the reissues below.  All info was provided by Howlin' Wuelf Media.  You can also listen to both albums here:   Swans continue their remastered reissues series on Young Go...

What I Heard This Morning: Bill Mountain

Image
So... "Let's Get It Started" is not a Black Eyed Peas cover. I just want to put out there right up front. This is the new single from a band called Bill Mountain . If you thought Bill Mountain might at least want to "get it started" with something Instead, what you have is a James Chance -inspired dance mutation that's in line with current post-punk retro-chuggers like Ed Schrader's Music Beat , DINOWALRUS and, to some extent, where Mi Ami left off with Steal Your Face . It's got the shuffling guitar strokes, a tolerable shriek and ritualistic urgency from a percussive standpoint.  Certainly there's energy and the sax lick stays with you.  You can listen to the track below: And when you're done listening, you can check out the info on Bill Mountain below, which was provided by Us/Them Group. Bill Mountain premiere first song from debut Mysterious rural Louisiana "Jungle Punk" band channeling early No Wave, art...

Daughter of a Tapehead: Swans

Swans Filth Young God Records Originally released: 1983 Reissued: 11.14 *Yeah, she wasn't too happy with me. **Swans might be a tad too much for a six year-old's ears.  That notwithstanding, the new Filth vinyl sounds great. The crushing, pulverizing force that dominates this release sounds immense.  If you purchase the album through Young God Records, your copy will be autographed by Michael Gira .  You can purchase the album here . Here's the track she sampled: Sincerely, Letters From A Tapehead

So, if this year's two-hour tension riddled colossus To Be Kind wasn't enough, Swans are reissuing their 1983 debut release, Filth , on October 28th.  Apparently, this will be the first of many reissues the band will be tackling as they delve into their discography over the coming year.  Filth is available for pre-order per a link which, along with all of the information below, was provided by Howlin' Wuelf Media. Shopping For Records: More Superior Viaduct reissues — electric eels, Glenn Branca and Alain Goraguer

Image
Reissue label extraordinaire, Superior Viaduct, is prepping some more out-of-print and/or obscure excellence to be released this November from proto-punk crazies electric eels , No Wave figurehead Glenn Branca and composer Alain Goraguer .  I'm especially excited about the Branca reissue, which is his solo debut, The Ascension .  I've had this album on my wishlist for many years, so I'm glad I waited on picking it up since a proper 12" edition will be available in the coming months. All info is provided courtesy of Howlin' Wuelf Media.  Superior Viaduct releasing archival albums from electric eels, Glenn Branca and Alain Goraguer in November The highly ambitious and ever-so-discerning re-issue label Superior Viaduct label will be releasing their next batch of releases on November 25. The Inbox Giveth: Aperiodic, Mala In Se, Joe 4 and Knife The Symphony double-split 7-inch

Image
Aperiodic / Mala In Se / Joe 4 / Knife The Symphony Double-Split 7" Phratry Records Released: 5.14 If you'd like to know what Phratry Records is about, this isn't a bad place to start. The label's 42nd release, this 4-song double-split 7" features the bands Aperiodic , Mala In Se , Joe 4 and Knife The Symphony , a selection of bands that range from artful shapeless oddities to quick-and-to-the-point riff-motive noise rock.  And, since we are living in a digital world, an additional four songs are available with the accompanying download. If you need a quick and solid recommendation, I bought this after listening to it via Bandcamp .  Otherwise, here's what you'll find: Aperiodic — Synthesizers lather the unsteady arrhythmia of "Something That Satisfies Me," Aperiodic's queasy lack of symmetry presented like a drunk's litany of complaints complete with the irregular rattling in his head.  "Scene Crush" follows as s...

The Inbox Giveth: Great Falls/Pink City split release

Image
Great Falls/Pink City Split (Tapes of a Neon God #7) Tapes of a Neon God Released:10.12 It's good to hear something violent and/or sullen from time to time.  The new split release from Great Falls and Pink City offers a healthy amount of rapid beat metalcore, Neurosis style post-metal noise revelry, Big Black informed pigfuckery and some electronically addled Joy Division post-punk with hints of Alan Vega .  Pink City is no stranger to Letters From A Tapehead, as I've discussed both the band's 2-song "Loop One/Service" single and their album, Designing Women . Expect something dark and loud for the very reasonable price of $5.  Links provided by Tapes of a Neon God. "If I had a fucking knife, I'd cut my head off right now" — Swans Are Live

Image
Swans We Rose From Your Bed With The Sun In Our Head Young God Records Released: 5.8.12 (Proper release; Limited handmade edition released 2.2.12) Severity.  Self-indulgence.  Instinctual art.  Primitive and emotional clarity manifest in perpetual, compositional, fascinating ruts.  For an audience.  All for an audience. The jogging clangor, a shower of bells and piano notes, percussive ringing tapped in rapid succession...  It's almost as if Michael Gira , head of the No Wave, Industrial legends-turned-high art collective Swans , sought to weed out the non-believers.  The frequency heightens, the music turning to screeching shrieks which then settles a tad just before "No Words/No Thoughts" is beaten into the foreheads of every man and woman in attendance.  Track 1 is over 23 minutes long, the first 13 minutes an introduction to the show as described above.  The applause seem polite, as if the crowd had been shocked into clapping. ...
