What's (Re)New?: Sprung aus den Wolken

Image
Sprung aus den Wolken s/t Bureau B Reissued: 9/23/22 The crude, junkyard confrontation that composed the recently reissued self-titled LP from Sprung aus den Wolken emerged from Geniale Dilletanten , an art movement whose genesis is credited to a concert of the same name (albeit intentionally misspelled) that took place at the Tempodrom in Berlin in 1981. In some ways comparable to the No Wave movement of the late 1970s in grit-strewn New York City which challenged the authenticity of CBGB’s seminal platform, Geniale Dilletanten was a reactionary burst of primal and creative energy whose ethos was interpreted through art, film, and, of course, music. Geniale Dilletanten alumni also include Einstürzende Neubauten, Mekanik Destrüktïw Komandöh (M.D.K.), and Der Plan to name a few. Sprung aus den Wolken (meaning “Jump from the Clouds” in English) was formed by Kiddy Citny, (a.k.a. Inri Intrigo). Initially a solo project, the iteration of the group that performed for this LP featured Fre...

2020 Playlist — Masma Dream World, Happy Place, METZ, Orochen, B R I Q U E V I L L E, Vatican Shadow, Susanna, ADULKT LIFE

Good evening,  I heard some good songs today. The coffee intake was high as I was sunk into my headphones this afternoon, finding comfort in the fact that I was able to simply cancel out all unwanted stimuli in favor of tunes aplenty. My ears perked up for the following: 2020 Playlist _________________________________________ Masma Dream World:  "Theta" (via Clandestine Label Services / Northern Spy Records / Bandcamp) Play At Night releases 9/25/20 Album Pre-Order https://masmadreamworld.bandcamp.com/album/play-at-night via Clandestine Label Services Masma Dream World—the solo recording project of multi-disciplinary artist/healer Devi Mambouka—today shared the lead single "Theta" from her forthcoming full-length, Play At Night , releasing September 25th, 2020 via Northern Spy Records. Devi (pronounced day-vee) provides insight on the track, which is releasing the day after Gabon’s Independence Day (August 17th): “From age 0-7, the human brain is in “theta,” a state...

Uniform: "Delco"

Image
A new single from Uniform is out today for the group's upcoming release, Shame . "Delco," (or Delaware County, a Philly suburb not too far from where I live in Montgomery County), is a personal and cathartic distillation of hometown abuse and its subsequent impact upon vocalist Michael Berdan. If you've heard Uniform before, you know that they, (Berden, guitarist Ben Greenberg, and drummer Mike Sharp), are adept at converting pain into decibels. "Delco" is no exception: Berdan's bark reverberating over a calamitous barrage of drum fills and riff-borne fuzz. Sometimes, making a loud noise is the best form of therapy. Shame is due out on September 11th from Sacred Bones. Uniform's 2017 release Wake In Fright was reviewed for No Ripcord . All info was provided by Rarely Unable. Uniform: "Awakening"

Image
"I have no use for God / God has no use for me / When there's nothing to lose / Then you are finally free…" Good to know. Navigating the industrial dance punk spirit of Wax Trax!, a new Uniform single called "Awakening" surfaced as part of Adult Swim Singles . For Uniform, the level of ire is familiar if not stylistically necessary at this point, though "Awakening" is a tad easier on the ears than what I'm used to. The recent acquisition of drummer Mike Sharp is immediately noticeable, a sturdy snare beat breaking through an array of electrified racket and droning guitar sounds while vocalist Michael Berdan waxes frantic about complacency, which is a worthy target. It's a solid four+ minutes.  Uniform's 2017 release Wake In Fright  was reviewed for No Ripcord . All info, including tour dates, comes courtesy of Rarely Unable. Uniform & The Body: "Not Good Enough"

Image
I stress that The Body remains a consistently fascinating entity whose work I either champion or dismiss, the creative push-n-pull a la Chip King and Lee Buford  qualifying as anything from merely pushing decibels to forward thinking and genre-hybridizing to unlistenable grating shit-spew. With that said, The Body partners well. Those excellent recordings they released with Thou , Released From Love and You, Whom I Have Always Hated , remain some of the most ear rupturing sounds I've heard on a physical album. So, being a Uniform fan, I have high hopes for  Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back , The Body's second collaborative noise venture with the group, which is due to release 8/16 via Sacred Bones . Uniform, another duo with a penchant for amplified gloom and tolerance-pushing vocals, has a machined edge that suits The Body's amp'd up misery. "Not Good Enough" is like a ten-megaton Suicide , every driving pulse set to trudge as if dragging th...

New Selections — HARMS, HHY & The Macumbas, CUTS, CAVE, Never Betters, Surachai, S-E-R-V-I-C-E

Image
Sorry to have quiet on the singles front for a while. Enjoy. HARMS : "Car Outside" (via Good Eye Records / Substream Magazine / Soundcloud) Via Good Eye Records: While playing with his other band, What Moon Things , Brooklyn-based artist Jake Harms began to start to feel an itch to make something wholly his own. It didn't start as a record - just a group of songs that seemed to make sense out of a fog of journal entries and scraps and demos and half-finished ideas throughout the years.  Working as HARMS , the inspiration for his forthcoming, debut EP, Aquarium , came from a poem he had previously written about the feeling of living in New York City for the first time as an adult: walking around is like being at the aquarium observing 6 tons per square meter of pressure on the glass dividing you and everything else The resulting EP finds Harms crafting pressurized dark rock fusing the goth grandeur of The Cure with the lonely indie pop of Porc...
