2020 Playlist — Sightless Pit, Six Organs of Admittance, Mr. Elevator, WIRE, Jeff Parker

Image
New year, new singles. While mostly resistant to the "playlist," I'm also aware that singles are consumed this way and that mixes, though crafted and superior in every way, are a thing of the past. This is partly because I no longer curate and develop a year end mix. Inasmuch as I enjoyed making them for friends and family for many years, and disclosing details for reader enjoyment, it's expensive and impractical. So, I'm buying in and I've rethought the "New Selections" tag for single entries. Enjoy some new tunes and be sure and give a look to my expanding 2020 playlist on Apple Music, the simply titled 2020 Playlist , because playlists require no thought, cohesion, or imagination. But, at least the music's good. _________________________________________ Sightless Pit : "Kingscorpse" (via Thrill Jockey / Bandcamp) Album Preorder http://thrilljockey.com/products/grave-of-a-dog Grave of a Dog by Sightless Pit Sight...

Six Organs of Admittance: "Adoration Song"

Image
Six Organs of Admittance , the work of one Ben Chasny , has released a new album called Burning the Threshold .  Following a psychedelic/post-rock/experimental phase with 2012's Ascent and his two Hexadic releases, Burning the Threshold marks a return to Chasny's acoustical, folk-based output and it's a worthwhile listen.  The first video from the album surfaced today for "Adoration Song."  You can watch the video below: All information on the release, tour dates, and links were provided by Rarely Unable PR.  Burning the Threshold was released on 2.24 via Drag City.  RISE UP NOW WITH SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, AS NEW VIDEO EMERGES; BURNING THE THRESHOLD OUT NOW On the cusp of two full decades of music-making, Six Organs of Admittance has ridden winds and waves spanning passion and logic and myth. The brand-new full length, Burning the Threshold , exudes a warmth not always found in Ben Chasny's music - but that's how life works, taking us up...

Six Organs of Admittance: "Exultation Wave"

Image
Earlier this year, Ben Chasny (a.k.a. Six Organs of Admittance ) issued the Hexadic LP, which was a creative showcase meant to demonstrate a new systemic means of songwriting that Chasny had developed.  I wasn't completely on board with Hexadic , (you can read my review here ), so the announcement that there would be a sequel to the album, predictably titled Hexadic II , wasn't met with a ton of elation.  However, listening to "Exultation Wave," the album's first single, I'm wondering if Chasny is applying the same songwriting methodology since this track seems much more thought out and less erratic.    Check out the track below. Hexadic II will be released by Drag City on November 20th. All info was provided by Rarely Unable.  SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE ANNOUNCES ACOUSTIC SECOND CHAPTER, HEXADIC II , OUT VIA DRAG CITY NOVEMBER 20TH ON LP AND CASSETTE Sounding forth from a resonating body, the music of Six Organs of Admittance seems to reach us f...

Six Organs of Admittance: "Wax Chance"

Image
Ben Chasny , Mr. Six Organs of Admittance himself, has gone psych-drone for this latest single, a shrieking and inebriated number called "Wax Chance" that's taking the lead for his upcoming new release, Hexadic.  There's a seasick sway to the bass and drum in this track, Chasny barely audible when he decides to coax a few syllables between any available space that isn't overtaken by his six-string dissonance.  I'm intrigued and already looking forward to hearing Hexadic in early 2015.  It's set to release in February via Drag City. Listen to the track here: Links and info were provided by Rarely Unable. SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE REVEAL "WAX CHANCE" FROM UPCOMING ALBUM, HEXADIC ; RELEASED VIA DRAG CITY 16TH FEBRUARY Following the recent announcement regarding Hexadic , the upcoming album by Six Organs Of Admittance, much has been made of the new combinatorial system devised by Ben Chasny which spawned it, even though it hasn't yet...

New Bums: "Black Bough"

Ben Chasny ( Six Organs of Admittance ) and Donovan Quinn ( Skygreen Leopards ) are releasing a collaborative new effort as New Bums .  The album is called Voices in a Rented Room and is slated for release in February of 2014 via Drag City.  A new single, "Black Bough," has surfaced and it sounds like dudes drunk on Blue Moon making Mazzy folk.  You can check it out here: All info comes courtesy of Rarely Unable. BEN CHASNY OF SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE + DONOVAN QUINN OF SKYGREEN LEOPARDS ARE NEW BUMS! DEBUT ALBUM, VOICES IN A RENTED ROOM , OUT FEBRUARY 17, 2014 ON DRAG CITY New Bums is the grudging match-up of Donovan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) and Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Comets on Fire, 200 Years, Rangda and who's hiring?). They didn't like each other at first, but now make sweet and sour music together over the light of the magical Sterno. The ideas go back and forth between the two in what seems to be a true partnership. Their songs are ...
